A Brief Description:
Sheriff Gideon Hartman is not only fast on the draw, but quick to pull the trigger as well, especially when a favorable result involves reward money...that being, reward money that is sorely needed to sustain the town’s church and thereby satisfy the Pastor Hartman side of him.
But being stuck in the sleepy little wide spot in the trail known as Mischief, doesn’t often bode well for many hombres of note happening by in that arid part of South Texas. So when a pretty young gal from down Cotulla way shows up with a need for enlisting the services of the fast gun folks have been talking about, I’d like to say that he succumbs to her irresistible charms, but in actuality, it’s the reward prospects associated with taking out the bunch of hired guns who are on the payroll of a ruthless land-grabbing cow-pattie of a man who is bent on acquiring her ranch by any means necessary.
With the rumor of a lost gold mine being somewhere out there on the Rocking Double R Ranch, Gideon manages to put all that aside while doing his level best to help Sheila and her brother, Jake, rid the town of Elbert Thayer and his bunch of henchmen. However, the entire endeavor becomes increasingly complicated. as a result of not only outright murder, but deceit on the part of one of the Rocking Double R’s own trusted wranglers.
Through all of this, the ensuing relationship between Gideon and Sheila is one that quickly develops into a mutual love and respect for one another that becomes convoluted because of the bounty hunter side of Gideon getting in the way to the point where the Lord God Almighty finally sees fit to take a hand in it.

I didn't want it to end! I really love the stories from r. William Rogers. I look forward to new books coming out! I can't put them down! He also gives history from all his books. I'm from Colorado so it's awesome to read books from my own backyard!

5 out of 5 stars: Great book...

Gideon Hartman was looked down on because he could handle a six gun as well as a Bible. He was the pastor as well as the sheriff of Mischief, Texas. Gideon chose the life of a gunslinger after his parents were gunned down when he was only a teenager. He became a bounty hunter hot of the trail of the men who murdered his parents & at the age of 30 he became an ordained minister. Sheila Robinson visits Gideon in his office & asks for his help because her town of Cotulla, just north of Mischief is being taken over by a land grabber who goes by the name of Elbert Thayer & he has approached Sheila & her brother Jake several times offering to buy their Rocking Double R ranch. She's not sure what measures Thayer will go to obtain her ranch because he has already hired gunmen & killed the local sheriff, Todd Winslow.
The residents of Mischief don't take too kindly to having their pastor preach on Sunday & kill the bad guys throughout the week even though he uses the reward money to finance the church. A walk down the street creates a sea of upturned noses & nasty looks. Therefore, Gideon doesn't hesitate to pack it in with a "Good Riddance" & head for Cotulla.
As a fan of r William Rogers myself, this book was everything I expected & more. I highly recommend it to all those western fans out there & if you have not read Mr. Rogers' books, this is a really excellent one to start with. Also highly recommend "She Wore It Tied Down" by the same author.

This is an exciting little book about a former bounty hunter turned sheriff and preacher who is asked to come and help a little town being taken over by a tyrant and his gunnies. He accepts and the adventure begins. A lot of gun fightng, romance, and even suspense is intermingled to make this a very good read. The book is clean and has a Christian bent to it. I highly recommend it.
